The Suwałki-Augustów Lakeland

One-day trip “Down the Augustów Canal” [“Szlakiem Kanału Augustowskiego”]

  • Arrival in Augustów – the summer capital of Poland. Walk around the town (Sigismund II Augustus Square, Boulevards along the river Netta, pier. Fun and games at the water ski lift by Necko Lake) (2.5 h)
  • Cruise on an Augustów Water Transport [Żegluga Augustowska] ship along a part of the Pope’s Trail [Szlak Papieski] and sailing through a sluice in Przewięź (1.5 h).
  • Studzieniczna – walk to Virgin Mary’s Sanctuary. Visit to the Forest Education Center of the Augustów Forest Inspectorate [Centrum Edukacji Leśnej Nadleśnictwa Augustów]. Hike along the nature trail “To the Forester’s Statue” [“Do Pomnika Leśnika”] (1.5 h).
  • Ride along the Augustów Canal to the twin-chamber sluice in Paniewo, and farther to Mikaszówka with an interesting wooden church (2 h).

Friday

  • Augustów – Boulevards along the river Netta, pier. Fun and games at the water ski lift by Necko Lake. (2h)
  • Cruise on an Augustów Water Transport ship along a part of the Pope’s Trail and sailing through a sluice in Przewięź (1.5 h).
  • Studzieniczna – walk to Virgin Mary’s Sanctuary. Visit to the Forest Education Center of the Augustów Forest Inspectorate. Hike along the nature trail “To the Forester’s Statue” (1.5 h).
  • Ride along the Augustów Canal to the twin-chamber sluice in Paniewo, and farther on to Mikaszówka with an interesting wooden church (2 h).
  • Saturday
  • Ride to Krzywe, near Suwałki, the registered office of Wigry National Park. We will go for an exciting walk along the “Forest” [“Las”] and “Fishless lakes” [“Suchary”] educational trails to a picturesque place with overgrowing lakes located within forests. (1.5 h)
  • Visit to a modern Museum of Wigry in Stary Folwark (1 h). If the weather is nice, it is worth to stop at the beach by the Museum or take a boat trip to perform and underwater observation of the lake’s bottom (45 min.).
  • Ride to the Wigry Peninsula to the former Camaldolese monastery. Visit to the architectural pearl of Wigry – the Baroque Immaculate Conception of Mary Church, Papal Apartment, hermitage complex (1 h).
  • Kayaking trip down the biggest river of the Suwałki Region, the Czarna Hańcza, along the Most – Frącki stretch. We will go through the picturesque scenery of the Augustów Primeval Forest (3-4 h).
  • Sunday
  • Trip on the Wigry Narrow Gauge Railway train from Płociczno to Krusznik and back (3 h).
  • Suwałki Landscape Park – a fairy tale land of one thousand lakes. We will go up the Taxus Mountain [“Cisowa Góra”], also called the Fuji of Suwałki, from which we can admire the glacial landscape. We will go to the Nature reserve of Bachanowo Boulder Field. In the location of Suwałki Landscape Park’s registered office, Turtul, we will look at a nature exhibition and climb up the Turtul esker. We will also bathe in the deepest Polish lake, Hańcza (3 h).
  • Ride to Stańczyki. We will admire the “Aqueducts of the Romnicka Forest” [“Akwedukty Puszczy Rominckiej”] (0.5 h).
  • Return travel.

One-week trip
1st day

  • Visit to the summer capital of Poland – Augustów.
  • Cruise on an Augustów Water Transport ship along the Pope’s Trail and sailing through a sluice in Przewięź.
  • Visit to the Virgin Mary’s Sanctuary in Studzieniczna and walk along the “To the Forester’s Statue” trail.

2nd day

  • All-day kayaking trip down the Augustów Canal from Mikaszówka to Płaska (13 km). Many attractions along the way – going through 3 sluices, including the twin-chamber sluice in Paniewo.

3rd day

  • Wigry National Park:
  • Krzywe – the “Forest” and “Fishless lakes” educational trails. If the weather is good, there is a chance to go to the beach by Czarne Lake.
  • Stary Folwark – visit to a modern Museum.
  • Former Camaldolese monastery – architectural pearl of Wigry National Park.
  • Cruise on the “Kameduła” ship on Wigry Lake.
  • Ride on a Wigry Narrow Gauge Railway train from Płociczno to Krusznik and back.

4th day

  • Travel to Sejny – visiting the former Dominican monastery, Visitation of the Virgin Mary basilica with an extraordinary sculpture, the so-called Opening Virgin [Madonna szafkowa], and the “Borderland” [“Pogranicze”] Center in the White Synagogue.
  • Visit to Puńsk – the capital city of Polish Lithuanians, inhabited in 80% by the representatives of this nationality. Visiting the Lithuanian House [Dom Litewski] and the Old Rectory with regional items.
  • By lake Szelment Wielki at the Voivodeship Sports and Recreation Center [Wojewódzki Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji], there is a possibility of renting bicycles and going for a trip around the lake. There are also other attractions available on the spot, such as a mini golf course, and in the winter one can go skiing.

5th day

  • All-day bicycle trip to Suwałki Landscape Park:
  • Going up the Taxus Mountain, also called the Fuji of Suwałki, from which we can admire the glacial landscape. Going to the Nature reserve of Bachanowo Boulder Field. In the location of Suwałki Landscape Park’s registered office, Turtul: looking at a nature exhibition and climbing up the Turtul esker. Bathing in the deepest Polish lake, Hańcza.
  • For scuba divers – possibility to dive into the depths of Hańcza. The scuba divers’ base is located in Błaskowizna.
  • Visit to Wodziłki – village of the Old Believers with preserved molenna (house of prayer). Covering the route around Jaczno lake along an educational trail.

6th day

  • Going to Stańczyki. We will admire the “Aqueducts of the Romnicka Forest” stretched over the valley of the river Błędzianka.
  • We will go deeper into the Romnicka Forest’s backwoods full of unique flora and fauna and which bear many features of the taiga. We will search for boulders which commemorate the hunts by Emperor Wilhelm II.

7th day

  • Visiting ruins of count Ludwig Michał Pac’s magnificent abode in Dowspuda, built in the English Gothic Revival style. Its wealth and splendor is connected with the Polish saying, “Pac is worth his palace, and the palace is worth Pac” [“wart pałac Paca, a Pac pałaca”].
  • Trip down the river Rospuda to the wilderness preserve called “Holy Place” [“Święte Miejsce”].
  • Saying goodbye to the Suwałki-Augustów Lakeland and return travel.
