The Narew Valley

One-day trip “The Polish Amazonia” [“Polska Amazonia”]

  • Setting off from Białystok.
  • Travel to Śliwno. Exciting trip across the river’s valley over footbridges and a system of mini ferries (1 h) to Waniewo.
  • Visit to the mansion house and the adjacent park in Kurowo – seat of Narew National Park (1 h).
  • Loop kayaking trip “Kayaking around Kurowo” [“Kajakiem wokół Kurowa”] – the best way to watch Narew National Park’s nature is from a kayak or a “pychówka” boat.
  • Travel to Tykocin by the river Narew – we will visit the town referred to as “Pearl of the Baroque” with the oldest preserved synagogue in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, and the reconstructed castle of King Sigismund II Augustus, the mightiest stronghold of the 16th and 17th century Poland (2 h).
  • Visit to the European Stork Village in Pentowo (1 h) – we will look at the Stork Gallery and the inhabitants of over 30 nests during their everyday activities.
  • Kiermusy – the Jerzy Hoffman Educational Museum of Polish Arms (1 h).
  • Return to Białystok

“Weekend in the Narew Valley” trip

Friday

  • Arrival in Kurowo – seat of Narew National Park. Looking at the nature exhibition at the mansion house, visiting the mansion park, and walking along “The Footbridge in the Marsh” [“Kładka wśród bagien”] – here, we will learn about the specificity of Narew National Park’s nature (1.5 h).
  • Boat trip around Kurowo (1.5 h). The best way to watch Narew National Park’s nature is from a traditional flat-bottomed “pychówka” boat.
  • Ride to Waniewo. Exciting trip across the river’s valley over footbridges and a system of mini ferries (1 h) to Śliwno.

Saturday

  • Ride in the direction of Kruszewo.
  • On the way, we will climb Babia Góra where we will find the replica of Światowid statue from Zbrucz, probably the place of pagan religious ceremonies (0.5 h).
  • In Kruszewo, we will walk to the observation point called “the broken bridge”. From head of the bridge, destroyed twice during the World Wars (visible traces of projectiles), we will watch the vast valley of the river Narew with the multitude of its beds. On both sides of embankment, we will notice traces of the beavers’ activity, and in the distance, remnants of the 16th century redoubt called “The Goat” [“Koziołek”] (1 h).
  • Travel to Choroszcz. Visiting the Palace Indoor Museum in the former summer residence of the Branicki family in the palace by the water (1 h), walking around the palace park.
  • Ride to Tykocin on the river Narew. We will visit the town referred to as “Pearl of the Baroque” with the oldest preserved synagogue in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, and the reconstructed castle of King Sigismund II Augustus, the mightiest stronghold of the 16th and 17th century Poland (2 h).
  • Visit to the European Stork Village in Pentowo (1 h) – we will look at the Stork Gallery and the inhabitants of over 30 nests during their everyday activities.
  • Kiermusy – the Jerzy Hoffman Educational Museum of Polish Arms (1 h).
  • Ride to Góra Strękowa. From the hill called “The Polish Thermopylae” we can admire the marvelous view on the meadows, which are flooded periodically. Walking along the educational trail “On the Narew Meanders” [“Meandrami Narwi”] to the Center of the Environmental Education in Strękowa Góra (2.5 h).

Sunday

  • Morning dose of adrenaline – instead of coffee – fun and games at the ropes course in Doktorce by the river Narew (2 h).
  • Arrival in Zawyki – a Podlasie Stork Village with over 40 nests of those birds. An interesting Holy Name of Mary chapel at the cemetery and by a spring (0.5 h). Offer for families with children – fun and games at the “Fairy Tale Island” [“Bajkowa Wyspa”] agritourism farm.
  • Kayaking trip to Suraż (3 h).
  • Suraż – we will climb the Queen Bona hill, the medieval fortified settlement, from which we will admire the view of the meadows by the river Narew. Visit to the private Archeological Museum and the Nawia settlement from the early Middle Ages (1.5 h).
  • Return travel.

One-week trip

1st day

  • Learning about the nature of Narew National Park: looking at the nature exhibition at the mansion house, visiting the mansion park, loop kayaking trip “Kayaking around Kurowo”, exciting trip over the Waniewo-Śliwno footbridge.

2nd day

  • All-day bicycle trip:
  • Choroszcz – Palace Indoor Museum in the former summer residence of the Branicki family.
  • Pańki – observation tower over the river Narew, walk to the weir in Rzędziany which is the northern border of Narew National Park, interesting paintings on the village cultural center’s walls.
  • Kruszewo – the “broken bridge” observation point
  • Ride along the right bank of the Narew through Izbiszcze, Kol. Topilec, Topilec (an interesting Orthodox church). Beautiful views on the river’s valley along the way.
  • Kościuki – visiting the maker of Narew’s local cheese from the milk of Polish red cattle.
  • Babia Góra with the replica of Światowid’s statue from Zbrucz – probably the place of pagan religious ceremonies.

3rd day

  • Suraż – one of the smallest Polish towns. Queen Bona hill, the past Ruthenian Square [Rynek Ruski] and Lach Square [Rynek Lacki], private Archeological Museum, early Medieval settlement Nawia.
  • Ride to Zawyki – a Podlasie Stork Village with over 40 nests of those birds. An interesting Holy Name of Mary chapel at the cemetery and by a spring (0.5 h). Offer for families with children – fun and games at the “Fairy Tale Island” [“Bajkowa Wyspa”] agritourism farm.
  • The Konopielka Trail – places connected with Edwart Redliński’s works: Frampol – the artist’s place of birth, Lesznia – a typical rural homestead.
  • Doktorce – time for active rest at the rope course.
  • Strabla – a village assigned to the court doctor of Queen Bona, Maciej of Krajna. The village’s name derives from the Italian words, “strada bella”. We will visit an old mansion (private property) and the Ascension of the Lord Church (a few-hundred-year old sacristy door).

4th day

  • We will follow the Podlasie White Stork Trail through Kożany (an Orthodox church and a chapel with a well), Kaniuki, and Ciełuszki – examples of rich wooden house decorations.
  • Land of Open Shutters – the village triangle of Trześcianka, Puchły, and Soce with the richness of wood architecture.
  • Return through the village of Pawły to Ryboły: visit to the Museum of Material Culture “Baćkauszczyna” (“Patrimony”).
  • At the end of the day, a short visit to Białystok – capital of the Podlaskie Voivodeship (we will visit the palace and garden premises of the Branicki family, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral, town square with the city hall, part of the Trail of Esperanto and Many Cultures).

5th day

  • All-day kayaking trip down the meanders of the Narew to Kolonia Topilec (7-8 h). During the trip, it is worthwhile to stop by the beach in Uhowo and to visit the Narew Gallery in Bokiny (shop about 100 m from the river bed) and in Topilec.

6th day

  • Tykocin on the Narew – we will visit the town referred to as “Pearl of the Baroque” with the oldest preserved synagogue in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, and the reconstructed castle of King Sigismund II Augustus, the mightiest stronghold of the 16th and 17th century Poland.
  • Visit to the European Stork Village in Pentowo – we will look at the Stork Gallery and the inhabitants of over 30 nests during their everyday activities.

  • We will ride along the Narew to Drozdowo where the Łomża Landscape Park of the Narew Valley has its registered office. At the Lutosławski family mansion we will acquire some knowledge on the nature and history of the Narew Valley’s central part.
  • Łomża – visiting the oldest city in the contemporary Podlaskie Voivodeship, starting with the magnificent Gothic cathedral to the bench with a statue of Hanka Bielicka.
  • Nowogród – visiting the Kurpie Open-air Museum located on a high scarp over the Narew.
  • Return travel.
