The Biebrza Valley

One-day trip “The Biebrza Swamps” [“Biebrzańskie bagna”]

  • The Osowiec Stronghold – we will visit the old tsarist stronghold built in the necking of the swampy Biebrza Valley, never captured. Looking at the military relics at the Museum of the Osowiec Stronghold, walking through the Central Fort to meet the sinister “Black Lady”. Perhaps there is going to be a chance to spot the bats living in the Stronghold (2 h).
  • Looking at the exhibition in Biebrza National Park’s registered office in Osowiec-Twierdza (0.5 h).
  • Ride to the educational trail called “Footbridge” [“Kładka”], walk to the ruins of Fort II (“Zarzeczny”) (1 h)
  • Ride along the “Tsar’s Road” including going to the Barwik path, Długa Luka footbridge, and Bagno Ławki observation tower (4 h).

 


 

Weekend trip “The Swamp Can Grip” [“Bagno wciąga”]
Friday

  • Arrival at Biebrza National Park’s registered office in Osowiec-Twierdza.
  • The Osowiec Stronghold – we will visit the old tsarist stronghold built in the necking of the swampy Biebrza Valley, never captured.   • Hike along the nature trail “Around Fort IV of the Osowiec Stronghold” [“Wokół Fortu IV Twierdzy Osowiec”] (1.5 h)

Saturday

  • Ride to Sztabin. Visit to the Gothic revival Church of St. James (to this day, artillery projectiles are still stuck in its walls and towers) (0.5 h).
  • Rafting trip down the lazy current of the meandering Biebrza to Jagłowo (interesting architecture of houses whose gables face the river) (6-7 h).

Sunday

  • Ride along the “high river bank” in the Lower Biebrza Basin.
  • Mścichy – educational trail “Biały Grąd” (1.5 h). The perfect place for spring birdwatching.
  • Brzostowo – “the land of happy cows”. Here, the cows swim across the Biebrza to get to the fertile pastures in the mornings and return to their homesteads the same way in the evenings (0.5 h).
  • Burzyn – a beautiful view of the Biebrza broads from the high riverbank (0.5 h).
  • Sambory-Ruś – a magnificent fortified settlement from the early Middle Ages, probably the past auxiliary keep to the nearby gord of Wizna located in a strategically important place: the Biebrza influx into Narew is perfectly visible from the fortified settlement (0.5 h).
  • Ride to Wizna. It is worthwhile to visit the reconstructed St. John the Baptist Church in the so-called Mazovian Gothic, and the fortified settlement located just behind the cemetery (1 h).
  • Return travel.

One-week trip
1st day

  • Arrival in Biebrza National Park.
  • Visit to the Osowiec Stronghold and the nature exhibition at the registered office of Biebrza National Park.
  • Walk along the “Footbridge” educational trail to Fort II (“Zarzeczny”).

2nd day

  • Ride along the “Tsar’s Route” including going to the nature trails “Around Fort IV of the Osowiec Stronghold”, “Barwik”, and “Długa Luka”.
  • Visit to the “King of the Biebrza” in Sucha Barć, the only homestead in the village of Budy.

3rd day

  • Ride along the “high river bank” in the Lower Biebrza Basin: Mścichy (the “Biały Grąd” trail), Brzostowo, Burzyn, fortified settlement in Sambory-Ruś.
  • In the meantime, it is worth to visit Wąsosz and Szczuczyn with very interesting churches.

4th day

  • All-day rafting trip from Sztabin to Dębowo. The trip is the perfect opportunity to look at the Biebrza nature “from the inside”.

5th day

  • Hike along the trails of the Grzędy Protected Area in Biebrza National Park:
  • “Grzędy” Forest Lodge [Leśniczówka Grzędy] – Animal Rehabilitation Center [Ośrodek Rehabilitacji Zwierząt] – Footbridge to the Red Swamp [Kładka na Czerwone Bagno] – “The Chapel” [“Kapliczka”] – New World [Nowy Świat] (dunes) – Wolves’ Mountain [Wilcza Góra]

6th day

  • Visiting the Upper Biebrza Basin:
  • Lipsk – the Podlaskie Voivodeship’s center of Easter egg making. Visit to the Easter Eggs Museum in Lipsk.
  • Kamienna Stara – the oldest preserved wooden church in the region (St. Anne Church) from the 17th century.
  • Kayaking trip from Kamienna Nowa to Sztabin (15.5 km – about 4 h)

7th day

  • Ride down the picturesque trail along the meandering Biebrza, from Dębowo to Dolistowo (Baroque St. Lawrence Church)
  • Visit to Suchowola – the oldest geometric center of Europe marked by the court cartographer of King Stanisław August Poniatowski. The place is also connected with the blessed father Jerzy Popiełuszko who was born in the village of Okopy, 3 km from Suchowola.
  • Return travel.
